Also known as The Jacket, this is Jack London's final novel. Even though it has elements of fantasy and science fiction, it is nevertheless vintage London, with all the characteristic storytelling traits intact. A man is imprisoned for murder. The warden, who bares him a grudge, punishes him by putting him in a straight jacket - for days on end. An inmate locked up in an adjacent cell teaches the hero how he can disengage himself from his body for the duration of the punishment, just to ease the pain. The hero takes it a step further and, whlie "roving" among the stars, gets to visit a number of his previous lives.
